Professor Kondo visits Bradford and the Submerged Landscapes Research Centre

9 Oct by Simon

The Submerged Landscapes Centre was delighted to Professor Yasuhisa Kondo – from the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature, Kyoto, Japan, and Chair of the Global Environmental Studies, the Graduate University for Advanced Studies, SOKENDAI, Japan. He is also manager for the Japan-funded Replacement of Neanderthals by Modern Humans Project and the succeeding PaleoAsia Project for 15 years. He has also spent 18 years conducting archaeological fieldwork in Oman.

Professor Kondo is collaborating with the SLC as part of the Life on the Edge project and is establishing a formal research collaboration with the University of Bradford. Whilst here he provided SAFS with a lecture entitled -“The ecological niche modelling of Palaeolithic populations in the Eastern Hemisphere”; concentrating on the use of large data and the migration of anatomically modern humans (Homo sapiens) and their genetic and behavioural interactions with archaic humans (Neanderthals, Denisovans, etc.) .

As part of the visit Professor spent a, muddy, day looking at the rock art of Ilkley Moor!
